How It Works
A cataract is a clouding of the normally-clear lens of the eye, and surgery is the only way to remove it. Cataracts cannot be treated through medications, eye-drops, diet, exercise or wearing glasses.
During the surgery, the cataract is gently removed, and a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) is then implanted, and settles into the eye.
The result is a self-sealing incision that, because there are no stitches, does not cause any distortion to the shape of the eyeball.
We use the best-available premium IOLs on your eyes, and can customise them to your specific vision and lifestyle needs so you may well find yourself seeing better than you ever did! Our IOLs have advanced optical zones that provide good vision across a range of distances and light conditions.

Cataracts are a common concern, especially as we age, leading to cloudy vision that can disrupt daily life. At Medownick Laser Eye Clinic, we provide advanced cataract eye surgery to restore your vision and enhance your quality of life. Our skilled team uses the latest techniques to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.
What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the normally-clear lens in the eye. You are not likely to notice cataracts when they first begin to grow, because they mostly develop gradually over time, and we adapt and learn to live with the changes.
In time, though, cataracts can seriously impact our vision. Some people compare vision with cataracts to looking through a window that is fogged up with steam. Images will appear increasingly blurry, and our perception of colours will be yellow as the colour blue drops out and seems to turn grey.
If allowed to develop, cataracts will stop you from performing even basic tasks, including driving, reading, writing, cooking, sports and hobbies.
What is Cataract Eye Surgery?
Cataract eye surgery involves removing the cloudy lens from the eye and replacing it with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure is highly effective and widely performed. At Medownick, we use the latest technology to perform cataract surgery with precision and care.
Cataract Surgery in Melbourne
If you're considering cataract surgery in Melbourne, Medownick Laser Eye Clinic is the place to go. Our clinic offers a comfortable and professional setting where you can receive high-quality care. Our experienced surgeons are dedicated to helping you achieve optimal vision through advanced surgical methods. We perform all our cataract surgeries at Epworth Hospital under twilight anaesthesia and can treat both eyes only one day apart in a walk-in-walk-out procedure.
How Eye Surgery for Cataracts Works
Eye surgery for cataracts starts with a thorough eye examination to assess the nature of the cataract and plan the next steps. At Medownick Laser Clinic, we can remove cataracts at any stage and size, even if they are so small that they are not yet impacting your vision. This can give you many decades of freedom from glasses and the peace of mind that comes from knowing there will never be cataracts in your future.
During the procedure, a small incision is made to remove the clouded lens, and an artificial lens is inserted in its place. The surgery is performed under twilight anaesthesia at Epworth Hospital to ensure comfort and safety. Most patients notice immediate improvement in vision, with full recovery occurring within a few weeks.
Benefits of Laser for Cataracts
Typically, we do not use lasers for cataracts. Instead, the cataract removal procedure is a fast, simple, walk-in-walk-out procedure (performed under twilight anaesthetic at Epworth Hospital) that results in crisp, clear, natural vision that can be life-changing for our patients. At Medownick, we are committed to using the best technology available to achieve excellent results in Vision Correction surgery in Melbourne.
