The Free Assessment
We can't wait to meet you
You do not need a referral to visit Medownick Laser Clinic. Instead, we invite you to come to our clinic free of charge, so that our specialised team of in-house optometrists and orthoptists can assess your eyes, and discuss your vision goals with you.
What to expect
During your free assessment, we intend to get to know you and your eyes in great detail. Each assessment is tailored to your specific eyes and needs, but in general we may:
- Look for the presence and placement of any scars or cataracts
- Measure the shape, thickness and rigidity of your cornea
- Measure the size of your pupils
- Measure your refraction and compare it to your existing glasses
- Take pictures of the back of your eye
- Test your ocular (eye) pressure
- Assess your eye health and other conditions
- Ask you lots of questions about your lifestyle and vision goals

The entire assessment process is very thorough, and typically takes around one hour to complete. The diagnostic equipment we use is state-of-the-art, and is able to give results so precise that we can use this same data to create surgical algorithms.
(Please note, you will likely be given drops that temporarily dilate your pupils, which may make your vision temporarily blurry and make you more light sensitive. Therefore, we encourage you not to drive immediately after your assessment. If you don't have alternative transportation, you are very welcome to stay with us as long as you need, and the team will happily look after you).
At the end of the assessment, we will talk you through any opportunities that may be available to you to get out of glasses and contact lenses, and give you detailed notes to take home and read at your leisure.
There is absolutely no cost to you for this assessment. You will not be charged anything, and there is no obligation for you to go ahead with any procedure.
