Laser eye surgery

Will I still need glasses after laser?

Most people who have laser eye surgery at Medownick no longer need glasses or contact lenses in their everyday lives. That’s one of the most exciting things about it: the freedom to wake up, see clearly, and get on with your day.

But for a small number of patients, a little bit of help from glasses may still be needed in specific situations, like reading fine print or driving at night. That doesn’t mean the treatment didn’t work. In fact, it often means they’ve achieved exactly what the laser is designed to do: give them the best possible vision their eyes are capable of.

Laser isn’t magic, it’s precision medicine

It’s easy to assume laser surgery guarantees “perfect” 20/20 vision, like waving a magic wand. And for many people, that's exactly what it does! But laser eye surgery isn’t magic. It’s a sophisticated, medical treatment that works with your eyes, not in spite of them.

If your eyes can’t see 20/20 even with glasses - for example, if you have amblyopia (lazy eye) or corneal irregularities - laser can’t create a result your eyes aren’t already capable of achieving. Similarly, if you’re beginning to develop presbyopia (age-related focus issues), laser may correct your distance vision beautifully, but you may still require glasses for reading. It’s not a failure, it’s simply biology.

The real success: freedom from full-time glasses

Instead of wearing glasses all the time, at work, while exercising, at the beach, in the car, while cooking or travelling, you may now only need them sometimes. For most people, that feels like an enormous win.

Just like other medical procedures that aim to restore quality of life, laser eye surgery is about improving your day-to-day experience, not chasing an imagined definition of “perfection.”
