What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye condition that primarily affects older adults, causing the lens inside the eye to become cloudy or blurry. The lens, which is normally clear, helps focus light onto the retina, allowing for sharp, clear vision. When a cataract forms, light cannot pass through the lens properly, leading to distorted or cloudy vision.
What causes cataracts?
Cataracts typically develop as an ordinary part of the aging process. They are as common as wrinkles or grey hair.
However, other factors can contribute to their formation and cause cataracts to grow earlier, such as diabetes, smoking, prolonged exposure to sunlight, and certain medications. Some people may also be born with cataracts, or develop them after eye trauma.
Symptoms of cataracts
The signs of cataracts can be subtle at first, but tend to worsen over time. The most common symptoms include:
- Blurry or cloudy vision
- Difficulty seeing at night or in low light
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Seeing halos around lights
- Colours look faded or yellowed
- Frequent changes in glasses prescription
Cataract surgery: a clear path to better vision
The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery.
During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is typically quick, minimally invasive, and performed under local anesthesia.
At Medownick we treat each eye only one day apart, at Epworth Hospital. Our patients walk out of the procedure each time: there is no need to stay overnight in hospital. Recovery time is generally short, with most patients noticing improved vision in just one or two days.
The benefits of cataract surgery
Cataract surgery offers several benefits:
- Restored vision: After surgery, most people experience a significant improvement in their vision and may no longer need glasses for tasks like reading or driving.
- Improved quality of life: By restoring clear vision, cataract surgery helps individuals return to daily activities, like driving, reading, and enjoying hobbies, with greater ease and confidence.
- Safety: Cataract surgery is highly safe and effective. The risk of complications is minimal, especially when performed by a skilled surgeon.
