Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye. Surgery is the only way to remove cataracts, and this procedure at Medownick gives an almost immediate "wow-factor" transformation.
You are not likely to notice cataracts when they first begin to grow, because they mostly develop gradually over time, and we adapt and learn to live with the changes.
In time, though, cataracts can seriously impact our vision. Some people compare vision with cataracts to looking through a window that is fogged up with steam. Images will appear increasingly blurry, and our perception of colours will yellow as the colour blue drops out and seems to turn grey.
If allowed to develop, cataracts will stop you from performing even basic tasks, including driving, reading, writing, cooking, sports and hobbies.
Fact vs fiction about cataracts
Causes
Developing cataracts is a natural consequence of ageing, and they may be present for many years before they begin to impact your quality of life. Other causes of cataracts include long-term exposure to UV rays, a family history of cataracts, medical conditions such as diabetes, previous injuries to the eye, and the long-term use of certain medications, such as steroids.
Symptoms
Cataract symptoms worsen over time. Patients may experience blurred vision, increased sensitivity to glare and strong light, frequent changes to glasses prescriptions, needing bright light to read, poor night vision, and a fading or yellowing of colours. There is no way to stop or reverse the growth of cataracts, any more than you can stop hair from turning grey
Myth-busting
- Cataracts are NOT a film over the eye
- Cataracts are NOT caused by eye-strain
- Cataracts are NOT cancer
- Cataracts do NOT spread from eye to eye
- Cataracts are NOT caused by laser eye surgery
- Cataracts do NOT cause irreversible blindness
After we remove your cataracts
Surgery is the only way to remove cataracts. They cannot be treated through medications, eye-drops, diet, exercise or wearing glasses.
Cataract removal at Medownick has an almost immediate wow-factor. Your vision is restored with stunning clarity and full colour, and both eyes are treated only one day apart.
Many patients find the world reopens to them after their cataracts are removed: they can drive again, read again, spot children and grandchildren in the playground or on the stage, return to the sports and hobbies they love, and truly appreciate the world in full colour and clarity when they travel.
What’s more, this is a permanent solution: once your cataracts are removed, they can never grow back.
